The Far-Reaching Impact of New York’s New Cybersecurity Rules

On February 16, the New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) released the final version of its new cybersecurity rule, 23 NYCRR 500. The new regulation establishes minimum security requirements for protecting sensitive, confidential data for banking, insurance and financial services companies that are licensed by the DFS, as well as third-party service providers that have access to this data. Most of the provisions went into effect on March 1 and include transition periods of six months to two years.
